Case Study: Manufacturing a Drug Delivery Device for Chemotherapy Support

Micron Solutions plays a key role supporting this drug delivery device in the market by manufacturing three critical components that require precision, consistency, and a fast, scalable process.

This wearable system allows healthcare providers to administer the device during the patient’s chemo appointment. The rest of the medication is delivered the next day, as outlined in the prescribing information, with no need for the patient to come back to the clinic. 

To make this happen, Micron Solutions was brought in to manufacture key single shot and 2C (2 component) molded parts that require tight tolerance heat-staking and pad printing. Micron NPL, engineering and operations team implemented a manufacturing strategy to ensure the highest quality and efficiency. As a result, each component meets exacting tolerances, works seamlessly with the others, and stands up to strict medical device standards.

Multi-Material Molding for Performance and Efficiency 

To meet the technical and functional requirements, Micron used its 2-shot injection molding capabilities. This method combines two materials in one molding cycle, creating components with both rigid and flexible features like seals, locks, and soft-touch areas without secondary assembly. 

This helped improve the performance of the device while also reducing production time and potential points of failure. 

Rotary Systems for Precision and Alignment 

Micron’s expertise with rotary table and turn-and-flip systems was key to this project. These production cells allow for precise alignment between the two molding shots, so the final part comes out just right, strong, functional, and visually accurate every time.

Knowing the importance of reliability in this specific medical device, Micron also integrated in-line high-resolution optical inspection stations into the process. This level of automation detects even the smallest inconsistencies before they become a problem, while also speeding up production.
